Getting Hitched in Toronto 2013

Toronto Open Data site has a list of all the marriage licenses offered up going back several years. I have broken it down to 2013.

 

So there's the totals for 2013 divvied up into the various boroughs that make up the fair City of Toronto.

I have no idea who this person is, but I extend her a tip of the hat for linking me to one of those Toronto Life best of lists... this one being the best places to get hitched in our said fair city. And, hey look, Toronto Life forgot to map their own list. Well never fear...


 


Seems like there's a decidedly high bias to the downtown core here. Sure there's a couple outliers in North York, but one wonders who is getting married there and how it reflects more broadly with marriage patterns among those listed in the initial graph. Where do people actually get married in this city?

 And last but not least... if you're looking for a guy to shoot your wedding, Storify tells me this guy thinks he's the best around...

 

Cineplex shares rise above index as NEO comp remains steady

A look back at the five year return of $100 CND invested in Cineplex Inc. shows a rising rate of return compared to a composite Toronto Stock Exchange and Standard and Poor's index. The stock has remained well above index during this period

According to the company's 2013 management information circular, a $100 invested in 2007, despite a dip due to the 2008 market crash, is now worth approximately $275. This is while the combined indices measure remains roughly at the $100 benchmark.

During this period the Named Executive Officers compensation - defined as the five most highly compensated executive officer's within the corporation in a given year - has staggered between five and $10 million.

The company states in in information circular that executive compensation is "guided by the tenet that a meaningful portion of an executive’s pay should be based on business results..  For example Chief Executive Officer Ellis Jacob has a base salary of $803,419 in 2010-12. His combined stock options and pension accruals bring his total compensation to several million dollars a year with a peak of $6,011,480 in 2011.

Movie Theatre Revenues vs. Expenses in Canada

Stats Can has a data set that, among other things, offers the profit margins for movie theatres across the country. This chart is focused to show the recent surge in revenues and expenses that came about in 2009 - possibly coinciding with the arrival of new 3D technologies with the launch of Avatar, and other capital investments like digital projectors. The 2011 data collection was unavailable.

Where we watch films

Here's a Google map that showcases many of our favourite filmgoing destinations. It's no shock to me, or anyone, that cine-culture congregates around the downtown core and not just because of TIFF, but also cafe and gallery spaces.

A deeper research would be fascinating as to the old repertory movie houses that survive on the periphery vs. the ones that are gone. It could be an interesting springboard to an analysis of neighbourhood planning or the historical constructions of communities who fostered neighbourhood art outlets vs. those that didn't.
