Movie Theatre Revenues vs. Expenses in Canada

Stats Can has a data set that, among other things, offers the profit margins for movie theatres across the country. This chart is focused to show the recent surge in revenues and expenses that came about in 2009 - possibly coinciding with the arrival of new 3D technologies with the launch of Avatar, and other capital investments like digital projectors. The 2011 data collection was unavailable.

Where we watch films

Here's a Google map that showcases many of our favourite filmgoing destinations. It's no shock to me, or anyone, that cine-culture congregates around the downtown core and not just because of TIFF, but also cafe and gallery spaces.

A deeper research would be fascinating as to the old repertory movie houses that survive on the periphery vs. the ones that are gone. It could be an interesting springboard to an analysis of neighbourhood planning or the historical constructions of communities who fostered neighbourhood art outlets vs. those that didn't.

 We thought a wise step before starting a film blog about Toronto was to call up the producer and host of one of the best Toronto based online cinema sites around.
